Once on the brink of extinction, the Eurasian beaver has made an extraordinary comeback. By around 1900, only about 1,200 survived in isolated populations after centuries of intensive hunting for fur, meat and castoreum. Since then, legal protection, hunting restrictions, reintroductions and natural expansion have helped drive a remarkable recovery, with the population estimated at around 1.5 million across its Eurasian range.
