Scientists in Japan have taken another step toward creating a truly blue rose. For decades, researchers have worked to make roses blue. In 2004, scientists at Suntory genetically modified roses to produce delphinidin, a pigment associated with blue flowers, leading to the development of a genetically engineered blue rose. Now, researchers have introduced four genes into roses so they can produce a blue pigment along with another nearly colorless molecule that helps bring out and deepen the blue. The new combination produced flowers with a distinctly violet-blue color. The engineered roses maintained their coloration for seven years in greenhouse tests in Japan and three years during field trials in Colombia. The researchers now hope to make the roses even bluer.Science and facts💡
