No babies in 96 years. For almost 96 years, no child has been born within the borders of Vatican City, making it the only sovereign nation on the planet with a birth rate of zero.Established in 1929 as the independent headquarters of the Catholic Church, this 44-hectare (118-acre) enclave is home to roughly 800–1,000 residents—mostly clergy, members of religious orders, Swiss Guards, and essential administrative staff. The vast majority of these inhabitants are either bound by vows of celibacy or live there temporarily for their official duties, meaning conventional family life and reproduction are effectively nonexistent. As a result, Vatican City has no maternity wards, no hospitals, and no delivery facilities of any kind. Any medical needs—including childbirth—are handled in nearby Rome, in Italian hospitals. This means that every baby delivered to Vatican residents is technically born on Italian soil, and no one can acquire Vatican citizenship by right of birth (jus soli).Citizenship in the Vatican is strictly functional: it is granted only to those actively serving the Holy See (such as cardinals, diplomats, and guards) and is automatically revoked when their service ends. This system, combined with the enclave’s religious character and tiny size, has ensured that the population remains stable through appointments and transfers rather than natural increase. For nearly a century, Vatican City has therefore stood as a unique child-free sovereign state—focused entirely on its role as the spiritual and administrative center of the global Catholic Church, rather than functioning as a conventional residential society.Did you know? 🎓

Alzheimer’s may be linked to gum bacteria, new research shows.Scientists have repeatedly found Porphyromonas gingivalis—the chief bacterium that causes periodontitis—inside the brains of people who died with Alzheimer’s. When researchers deliberately infected mice with this oral bacterium, the animals rapidly developed key Alzheimer’s pathology, including the buildup of amyloid-beta plaques. Perhaps most alarming, the bacteria’s toxic enzymes have been detected in the brains of people showing early Alzheimer’s changes years before memory loss or other symptoms appear, suggesting the infection may quietly initiate damage long in advance. These discoveries have sparked serious interest in new treatment approaches. An experimental drug called COR388 (from the company Cortexyme) has already succeeded in lowering both bacterial load and amyloid-beta levels in preclinical models. Although large human trials are still needed, the evidence is mounting that at least some cases of Alzheimer’s may have an infectious trigger rather than being purely degenerative.[Dominy, S. S., et al. "Porphyromonas gingivalis in Alzheimer’s disease brains: Evidence for disease causation and treatment with small-molecule inhibitors", Science Advances, 5(1), eaau3333]Science and facts💡
