Earth may be heading toward conditions that could make large parts of the planet uninhabitable, according to scientists.According to a recent assessment in the journal One Earth, several key components of the climate system may be nearer to irreversible change than earlier estimates suggested. These “tipping elements” include the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, Arctic permafrost, mountain glaciers, the Amazon rainforest, and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, a major ocean current that influences global climate patterns.Once any of these systems crosses a critical threshold, the resulting shifts can become extremely difficult or impossible to reverse. The greater risk is that the failure of one element could set off others. Loss of reflective Arctic ice leaves darker surfaces that absorb more heat and speed up warming. Freshwater pouring from Greenland may weaken the Atlantic circulation, alter tropical rainfall, and dry out sections of the Amazon. Large-scale forest loss would then release stored carbon, intensifying the warming still further.Such a cascade could lock the planet onto a “hothouse” path, in which self-reinforcing feedbacks drive temperatures higher even if emissions are later reduced.Researchers have identified sixteen major tipping elements, ten of which would increase global warming if triggered. The new analysis indicates that tipping processes may already be under way in the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, while permafrost, glaciers, and portions of the Amazon appear to be nearing critical thresholds.Precise timing is still unknown. Scientists cannot yet predict exactly when any single system will tip or how rapidly a chain reaction might spread. That uncertainty itself heightens the danger. By the time a tipping point becomes unmistakable, it may already be too late to reverse. The authors emphasize that swift cuts in fossil-fuel use, protection of ecosystems that store carbon, and a coordinated global monitoring network for tipping points could still reduce the risks.[Ripple, W. J., Wolf, C., Rockström, J., Richardson, K., Wunderling, N., et al. (2026). The risk of a hothouse Earth trajectory. One Earth, 9(2), 101565. DOI: 10.1016/j.oneear.2025.101565]Science and facts💡
