In a small Japanese village, life-sized dolls have taken the place of people who once lived there.Located in Tokushima Prefecture's Iya Valley, Nagoro is a village known for its unusual residents: hundreds of handmade figures dressed as farmers, students, workers and villagers. The story began in the early 2000s when local artist Tsukimi Ayano returned to her childhood village. Nagoro had been losing residents as people died or moved away, leaving many homes and public spaces empty.Ayano initially made a scarecrow resembling her late father to protect her garden from birds. Over time, she began creating more dolls, using materials such as straw, cloth and old garments to recreate the people and activities of village life.Today, dolls sit at bus stops, stand in fields, gather outside buildings and appear along quiet roads. Their lifelike appearances can make visitors momentarily mistake them for actual people. One of the village's most striking sights is its former elementary school. The school closed in 2012 after its final two students graduated. Today, handmade figures of teachers and children occupy its classrooms, recreating a school day that can no longer take place.Other dolls depict people fishing by the river, working in the fields or carrying out ordinary village activities. But behind the unusual sight lies a deeper story. Nagoro's dolls reflect the challenges of rural depopulation in Japan, where aging communities are losing residents and younger generations are moving to cities.Through her creations, Ayano has preserved memories of the people who once called Nagoro home, transforming an almost deserted village into one of Japan's most unusual destinations.Did you know? 🎓
