A cannabis-based drug was found to completely eliminate debilitating PTSD nightmares. In a randomized clinical trial published in Nature Medicine, researchers tested dronabinol, a prescription form of THC, in 171 adults with PTSD who experienced frequent, severe nightmares. Every night for 10 weeks, participants received either dronabinol or a placebo. The difference was striking. About 58% of people taking dronabinol had their nightmare burden cut by at least half, compared with 29% taking placebo. Even more striking, 36.8% reported that their nightmares disappeared completely, compared with 14.5% in the placebo group.PTSD nightmares can force people to repeatedly relive traumatic events during sleep, leading to chronic sleep disruption and fear of going to bed. Existing medications often provide limited relief specifically for nightmares.THC interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate sleep, stress, and emotional memory. Researchers suspect THC may reduce dream activity during REM sleep, potentially weakening the intense nighttime re-experiencing of trauma. But this was not a cure for PTSD. The study did not conclusively improve overall PTSD severity or depression. Side effects such as dizziness, headache, and increased appetite were more common, and researchers say longer studies are needed to understand tolerance and long-term safety.Still, for one of PTSD’s most persistent symptoms, the results offer unusually strong evidence that a targeted cannabinoid treatment may help.Science and facts💡
