A huge hidden rainforest was discovered using Google Earth. In 2005, conservation scientist Julian Bayliss was scanning satellite imagery on Google Earth when he noticed a large, unexplained green patch on Mount Mabu in northern Mozambique. He suspected it could be an intact rainforest. A visit to the mountain confirmed it: a vast, largely undisturbed rainforest covering thousands of hectares. The forest had remained largely unknown to scientists because its remote, inaccessible location kept it isolated.A scientific expedition in 2008 found hundreds of species, including three butterfly species and a snake species previously unknown to science. It is considered one of southern Africa’s most important medium-altitude rainforests.Did you know? 🎓
