In 2018, a helicopter pilot flying over the mountains of British Columbia spotted something that shouldn't exist — a massive hole punched into the snow, with an entire river pouring straight into it and vanishing.Hidden deep in Wells Gray Provincial Park, the pit is roughly 330 feet long and 200 feet wide at the top. When a team of experts finally lowered a climber inside, he descended about 260 feet down the sheer wall before the crashing waterfall forced him to stop. A laser then measured at least 443 feet down the slope — and still never found a floor. The mist thrown up by the falling water hides everything below, so to this day no one actually knows how deep it goes.Locals nicknamed it "Sarlacc's Pit" after the monster from Star Wars. Old aerial photos going back to 1949 hint the hole was once sealed by snow even in summer, meaning it may have only recently opened up. Scientists suspect the swallowed river resurfaces at a spring more than a mile away — but no one has ever proven where the water actually goes. The site is now closed to the public to keep people safe.Science and facts💡
