Russia has begun restoring a long-neglected Soviet-era military garrison in Petrozavodsk, near the Finnish border, according to satellite images published by Yle. The area, overgrown and largely abandoned since the 2000s, has been cleared and filled with military vehicles, with new barracks planned. Yle reports the modernization was not previously announced publicly. Experts say the site is likely linked to Russia’s newly formed 44th Army Corps, which could add around 15,000 troops. While most of the corps is currently fighting in Ukraine, part of the force has already arrived in Karelia and needs infrastructure.
