An assassination attempt targeted Maj. Gen. Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of Russia's 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, in Saratov region at about 07:00 on September 3. The attacker allegedly waited for him near a private residence in Probuzhdenie and fired two pistol shots, hitting him in the head and abdomen. Varpakhovich is reportedly in critical condition, while the attacker has not been detained.
