Russia has begun a large-scale modernization of Iskander-M ballistic missiles, aiming to extend their range to 1,500 km. Russia has already begun using Iskander-1000 missiles with ranges up to 1,000 km and reportedly has around 20 more in stock.Experimental launches of the 1,500 km version are planned from October-November, potentially against western Ukraine. If testing succeeds, Russia reportedly intends to launch serial production under the Uran-2 name, initially at around 20 missiles per month and later increasing to 50. The missiles are intended to replace more expensive Kinzhal missiles.
