Russia is developing barrage-balloon defenses for oil refineries and other strategic facilities against Ukrainian drones, reviving a concept used against bombers during World War II. Specradio demonstrated a system in which radar detects the altitude of an incoming drone and automated balloons adjust their height to place cables directly in its path. During testing, a drone reportedly caught the cable around its propeller and became trapped.
