In central Mexico, there's a green, grassy hill with a little colonial church perched on top — and almost no one walking past realizes they're looking at the largest pyramid on Earth. ⛰This is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, and by sheer volume it's bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza — holding nearly twice as much material inside. It was built and rebuilt outward over roughly a thousand years, layer upon layer, by one culture after another. But it was abandoned long before the Spanish ever arrived, and slowly vanished beneath centuries of soil and plants until it simply looked like a natural hill — so when the conquistadors raised their church on the summit, they may not have even known what was buried underneath. Archaeologists have since bored almost five miles of tunnels straight through it, discovering older pyramids sealed inside newer ones like nesting dolls. Yet it has never been fully excavated — because uncovering one version would destroy another. Science and facts💡
