82 years ago Today, the largest amphibious invasion in history began along the coast of Normandy, known as D-Day.Before sunrise, service members and American Battle Monuments Commission staff placed exactly 18,778 flags at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade worked alongside West Point cadets to arrange 9,389 American flags and 9,389 French flags next to each headstone.
