Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi has officially been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, replacing General Oleksandr Syrskyi.Drapatyi first gained national recognition in 2014 during the liberation of Mariupol, where he personally led an armored breakthrough into the city. During the full-scale war, he played key roles in Ukraine's Kherson counteroffensive and later commanded the defense against Russia's cross-border offensive toward Kharkiv in 2024.As commander of the Ground Forces, Drapatyi pushed for decentralized command, promoted younger combat-tested officers and openly challenged bureaucratic stagnation within the military. He also became known for emphasizing accountability, closer cooperation with frontline commanders and the rapid integration of new technologies, including expanded drone capabilities.
